French toast was my absolute favorite breakfast food as a kid. My mom made it for me every once in a while for breakfast. Those are some of the fondest memories that I have. But I haven’t had or made french toast in a looming while. And when I did, it never seemed quite as good as when my mom made it. Enter this recipe. Crispy caramelized french toast with a sautéed apple topping.
If that doesn’t wet your whistle, get you revving or make you hungry, then we can’t be friends. Probably. So grab your eggs, dairy and stale bread, because childhood breakfasts are about to make a comeback!
What’s In It?
First, this french toast recipe uses heavy cream instead of milk. You can use regular old milk if you so choose, but you ought to try it with the heavy cream at least once. There’s nothing like it. The closer you get to skim milk, the thinner the toast will feel and taste. In other words, skim milk will produce the “thinnest” toast, while 2 percent milk, whole milk and heavy cream will all produce thicker toasts. My personal recommendation? Use cream for french toast. There’s really nothing like it and it’ll fill you up like no french toast you’ve ever had.
Anyway, the other really great thing about this french toast is the APPLE FREAKING TOPPING. SAUTÉED FREAKING APPLES. I’m moderately excited about this. And how could I not be? I mean, wouldn’t you love it if you had a SAUTÉED FREAKING APPLE TOPPING? Trust me. You will.
And the other other great thing about this french toast? There’s just a hint of flour in the batter that makes it genuinely crispy and you add some sugar just before you put it on the pan which makes it CARAMELIZE AND TASTE LIKE THE TASTY HAMMER OF AWESOME THAT IT IS. It’s very different and very tasty.
This french toast breaks the status quo. And that’s good. Boring food makes for boring life. The simple way to put some spice (pun intended) in your life? Try new things in your cooking! Use a different spice than you normally do! Use five! You will never discover newness or explore your own genius until you start to push your own personal envelope and think outside of your box.
Anything tough?
Nope! It’s french toast. Cut and dry.
Anything Else?
From a cooking perspective? Not really. Just be ready to seriously enjoy this. I really hope you like it as much as I do.
