Tortilla chips! I love their crunch! I love their versatility! I love how they remind me of my childhood! And I love even more that I can make my own tortilla chips right at home with exactly the flavor and seasoning that I want! What’s that? You’d like to know how I do it? I’ll show you today, with my DIY cinnamon tortilla chips!
Why would I make my own tortilla chips?
This is the question that’s probably on everybody’s mind. Since they’re so accessible at the store and so cheap, why not just buy them instead of making them? And it’s a good question! From a purely financial standpoint, you can’t beat the price of store-bought tortilla chips.
But in my experience, those store-bought tortilla chips rarely come in sweet varieties. And unless you’re buying name brand, they usually don’t taste very good (especially the one’s that only cost a dollar. I ate them twice. Once on the way down and once when they came back up). Even the ones that do taste good have uneven distribution of salt and things just get not very tasty. By making your own, you give yourself complete control over taste and quality, and that, for me, is worth the price of ingredients.
Is it hard?
Hardly! In fact, all it takes is some tortillas, a brush of oil, your pick of seasoning and spices, and an oven! Of course you could make your own tortillas and have that extra control over your chips and I strongly encourage you to do so if you, like me, enjoy making everything from scratch. For those of you who are less keen on a “from-the-ground-up” approach, rest assured, store-bought tortillas will still yield and excellent product.
What can I use them for?
I recommend using them with my Strawberry Avocado Salsa! Especially for Valentine’s Day. Their cinnamon sugar taste is almost like a churro, and that gives you a lot of options. Use them in an appetizer, especially with ingredients that pair well with something lightly sweet and cinnamon-y. Is that a word?
That same taste makes them ideal for desserts, especially ones that use something creamy. You could do an inside out churro with the filling done as a sauce over the chips. You could add them to a trail mix to add a new taste. You could serve cheese with them, or cranberries, or blueberries, or toss them with some citrus or, or, or . . . well, you get the idea.
The sky’s the limit with your creativity and these chips. Just do me a favor and let me know what you think of them!
- 2 teaspoons neutral oil -- something like canola oil or vegetable oil. I like to use a Misto to spray it evenly onto my chips
- 6 medium tortillas -- wheat-based or corn, it just doesn't matter. You'll get tastiness out of both!
- 2 Tbsp sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon, freshly ground if possible
- ½ teaspoon nutmeg, freshly grated when possible
- A pinch of allspice
- Mix sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice
- Cut your medium tortillas into wedges -- I use a pizza cutter for this
- Spray (or brush) evenly and LIGHTLY (can't stress that enough) with oil
- Bake at 350 for 20-ish minutes. When they're crispy and crumbly is when they're ready
