Cinnamon Strawberry Avocado Salsa

February 5, 2015 by DIYfoodguy Leave a Comment

Cinnamon strawberry avocado salsa is a spin on traditional salsa and a recipe for love! And also for salsa. Obviously. By @DIYfoodguy

Salsa! Culinary representative of Mexico, savior of tortilla chips and made of tomatoes, bell peppers and chiles Right? Right?

WRONG. And thank heavens!

Or at least, partially wrong. See, at its most basic, salsa is just a chunky, uncooked sauce, and that means, typically (though not always) served with chips. Salsa can be so much more than the stereotype! And in this case, we’ve got a cinnamon strawberry avocado salsa that’s perfect for game day splurges, romantic outings and parties alike!

Is it hard to make?

Since salsa is always sold in a fancy glass container or a giant plastic jug it must be hard to make, right? Thankfully no! In fact, you can make this salsa from top to bottom in 10 minutes using nothing more than a knife, cutting board, and large bowl. Whoever said that great tasting food had to be hard to make was lying.

If you want to really go all out and make a party appetizer or a Valentine’s Day treat, these pair really well with my DIY Cinnamon Tortilla chips. It’s a sweet variation on chips and salsa. I most recently made this salsa for a bridal shower (the same one that I made the brownie bites for) and people. went. nuts. Seriously. The whole thing was gone in 20 minutes and it was practically all that people could talk about. So trust me, you’ll like this recipe, and so will your friends. Especially the women (are you paying attention, fellow men?).

Why strawberries and avocados?

Because strawberries and avocados are the food that keep unicorns alive! But in all seriousness, like I’ve talked about in previous posts, sweet and fatty go together extremely well. We put butter in cakes and brownies for the same reason.

Past that, avocados are a bit of a unique fat. They are sweetened with great ease and, in other countries, are often eaten as a dessert. In fact, the best avocado that I ever had was in a milkshake! I know, it seems a strange concept, but it is absolutely delicious. This salsa isn’t a milkshake, nor is it nearly that sweet, but it follows the same principle. The cinnamon is just icing on the cake.

So enjoy! And remember that this is a recipe for love. And cinnamon strawberry avocado salsa. Obvi.

Cinnamon strawberry avocado salsa is a spin on traditional salsa and a recipe for love! And also for salsa. Obviously.
Ingredients
  • 3 cups avocado
  • 4 cups finely chopped strawberries
  • 2 tablespoons minced fresh cilantro or parsley (optional, but recommended)
  • 2 teaspoons fresh lime juice
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1 Tbsp ground cinnamon (freshly ground, when possible)
  • 1 tsp nutmeg (freshly grated, when possible)
  • ½ tsp allspice
Instructions
  1. Grate, grind, juice and chop all ingredients. Make sure that your avocado is chopped niiiiiiiiiiiiiice and tiny. The strawberry can be roughly chopped, but make sure that that avocado is itsy-bitsy.
  2. Combine all ingredients at once and fold them into each other until loosely mixed.
  3. Enjoy!
