With the rise of the internet, fewer things have become more popular than bacon. Its utility as a breakfast food and an accent flavor in rich and complex dishes is well documented, but what catches my attention is the growing number of dessert applications available for the cut. With its unique blend of salt and fat, bacon is a prime candidate for making anything sweet taste sweeter. So wrassle those hogs, grab that bacon and get ready for DIY candied bacon.
What’s in it?
Candied bacon is the result of dredging bacon in sweetener, most often brown sugar, and then exposing it to heat. When its done, you have perfectly cooked bacon with a crunchy crust made of what is essentially melted sugar.
How do I make it?
Pre-heat the oven, dredge the bacon in the sugar, bake it for around 20-30 minutes (the time will vary based on your altitude, oven, and other factors), and let cool. Nothing could be simpler, though you will need to keep a keen eye on the bacon as it cooks. If not, it could overcook or burn or suffer from any number of other maladies.
As the bacon cooks, the sugar (and the molasses inside the brown sugar) melts, allowing the bacon to cook while also giving it a delicious sugary coating.
Anything else?
Candied bacon is great in ice cream, doughnuts, brownies, and pie. And TONS of other stuff. You can even eat the stuff on its own for ultimate deliciousness! Let me know how you use it, and come back next time for more DIY food, customizable to your taste and preference!
